Piezoelectricity (pressure)

Piezoelectricity is harvesting the kinetic energy generated by pressure. In this context it can be seen as piezoelectric energy generating floors or devices which require any type of pressure.

Energy generating floors in a subway station in Tokyo.

They placed these floors under the gates in the station. A total of 25 m2 floor that generates 1400 kW a day (which is about 56 kW per square meter). Enough to power up the stations lights and displays. Although this sounds good, it is notable that this station is one of the most busiest subway station on the planet.

Innowattech

Innowattech is a company that developed an alternative energy system that harvests mechanical energy imparted to roadways, railways and runways from passing vehicles, trains and pedestrian traffic and converts it into green electricity. The system, based on a new breed of piezoelectric generators, harvests energy that ordinarily goes to waste and can be installed without changing the habitat.
