Sails

The sails of the Veni-Vidi spheres react to the sunlight. When the solar radiation is high the sails can rotate, to block the sun. I tried to built a maquette of this principle. Every sailpipe needs 2 ropes (only two ropes with pulling force can keep the pipe stable) to control the rotation. The sails are folded, so they can stretch and shrink when needed. Every pipe in the maquette has two controlling ropes and two points where the sail is fixated.

In order to let the sail stretch and shrink, only the outer rubber sail fixations are fixed. The rest of the gaps in the sails are conducting the ropes to prevent the sails for tearing apart. The fixation method of the pipe to the construction, can be compared with that of a casterwheel (see references) that is fixated with bolts on the facade. The wheel is in this case a pipe that can rotate over one axe.

Main structure

The sphere has a floating base, comparable to the bottom of a ship where the bottom narrows to reduce water resistance. The polyester is watertight. The center wall is made out of concrete, the boat gains stability when the heaviest load is in the center of the building. 4 Steel spants are fixed to the base (lowest part) and centerwalls (highest part). Underneath the fixed slabs a steel cross is attached to the steel ring. The steel ring prevents the 4 steel spants from rotating. The outer facade gets his stability from the steel spants. The collapsable wall is mounted on a steel frame. By removing the bolts, wall panels easily can easily be removed.

Underneath the center of the sphere a heat exchanger heats up or cools down the inblowing air temperature, with the RDM-water. The high airduct above the bathroom, exhausts the polluted air.

Connection with others

Project14-clip.jpg

With a steel clipping system, the spheres can be fixated to other projects.
