Learn and play

"Learn and Play" is a concept which stands for learning about sustainability and generating energy while playing. This concept will be brought to life with several projects, where each project has its own input and quality.

Members of this concept are:

The Wave Phenomena (now Connecting Dots) - Information centre

Ez RDM - Information centre (business focused)

Welcome to the Cave - Public spaces

Continuality - Landscape

Open House - Housing

Project Continuality will be landscape oriented that will create an island and connects it with several other projects.

Connections to nearby projects is the most important aspect of this landscape. The name Continuality is refering to all the people using the island to get from point A to B, experiencing the cluster as a whole instead of seperate volumes on the water. It provides accesses from the island to projects like Ez RDM, Welcome to the Cave, The Wave Phenomena (now Connecting Dots) and Open House.

The connections mentioned above are located on the island, which is also our cluster of Learn and Play. However, there is also another important connection, which is from Transport Hub to Fifth Season. This connection will be for the most visitors the main route of entering/leaving the RDM area. That's why the bridges and roads that make this connection possible are much wider, use different materials than the paving and are easier to recognize.

Accesses to the island

Project-building

The RDM area is currently a world on its own. The link between this area and the village is no more visible. One of the reasons for this is the long building that works like a physical barrier. This building separates the RDM area and the village. The most important information here is that this building blocks the sight between the two areas, which might encourage the feeling of separation. In order to reconnect those two there must be some kind of attraction for the citizens of the village to attract them to the RDM area. Not specifically a new function or facility, but something that stimulates the habits of the citizens. (See project-person B for more information)

Project-object

A crucial object for this project is this pier. It creates options on the accessability to the island. This is important, because people should be able to enter the island in many ways as possible. When there is just one access it will give a feeling of entering a specific area. If there are many ways to enter, it will feel like a part of something big, which makes the experience of the cluster a lot stronger. Therefore especially the routing is integrated in the island to be a part of a continuous motion of traveling.

Project-person(s)

This part of the interactions is the most crucial part, because these are the people who are going to use the island the most.

We can separate the users in two groups:

A. Users of the RDM area, mostly students and business people.

This group will make the most use of the project. Both the students and business people will take the main route from the Transport Hub to either Sarah's boats or the bridge to Fifth Season to go further into the RDM. So there is an aspect of travel.

Another aspect is to stay. In this case it can be after school or work while waiting for the ferry to come. To kill some time people can enjoy themselves by walking around the park or make use of the activities in the cave level (more detail on styling page).

B. Citizens of the nearby village.

There are still people living in the village who have seen the connection in the past between the village and the dock. The village was built for the workers of the RDM dock. This means that most of the people in the village knew each other from work. Over the years this solidarity faded and faded and eventually disappeared. Hence giving the citizens this connection back and creating solidarity is a top priority. The image underneath shows an example of how the current habits of the citizens can be improved by adding certain activities to the project location.

Person-person

This part can be seen as a follow up from project-person. Once the students and the citizens start to use the island and all its facilities on daily bases, both groups will encounter each other more and more often. Slowly but steady they will start greeting each other and start to communicate. This will be a great start to get solidarity back once again between the RDM area and the village.
