Overview of proposed market interactions

Interactions: Market - Projects

Based on the interactions diagram above, there are 4 tiers, or strengths of interaction with other projects on the RDM site:

01 - Physical / Access / Customers - these are the immediate neighbours of the market, that provide the strongest connections within the dock, including physical links and continuation of routes through the market and across the site;

02 - Supply - projects across the site that supply products for sale on the market stalls;

03 - Customers - these locations generate custom for the market and social hubs;

04 - Transport - by providing transport links around the site and to the city beyond, these projects bring visitors from further afield;

01 Physical / Access / Customers

De Geleerde Netwerk

The market will form a physical link with this neighbouring project to the south, which will provide study and social spaces for students of the adjacent RDM campus. By linking the projects' promenades users will be able to diffuse between the complimentary activities.

Floating Theater

Another physical link wil be established with this innovative performance space along the dockside to the north. The market will provide promenade links that allow users to access the entertainment on offer here, whilst the projects have complimentary aims in attracting social users into the dock throughout the day.

Lusthof

This comprises the final physical link and it extends the east-west route across the market onwards to other locations across the dock. The residents of Lusthof will be able to use the market for their daily shopping, plus it will provide alternative social locations outside of their work.

02 Supply

Food CenteRDM

A key aim of the market will be to source and sell locally produced food and other items, in order to maximise its sustainability. This nearby project will grow various foodstuffs which can then be sold within the market by selected traders. This project will also allow market stalls to be moored at it remotely, thereby extending the market across the dock.

Vfood Restaurant

Another nearby project that will produce foodstuffs, these can then be sold within the market.

The Digital Gardener

This is a vertical garden with opportunities for any foodstuffs produced to be sold by gardeners at the market.

03 - Customers

SEPAC

As a key venue providing offices, a community centre and commercial space, this will generate footfall from local residents and visitors. The market will provide access routes across the dock to this location, hence will in turn receive custom from these users.

The Knowledge Centre

A neighbouring residential learning venue, the students here will be able to take time out and visit the market and social hubs.

The Fifth Season

As an entertainment venue with a museum and auditorium, visitors here can visit the market before and after events.

Open House

This project provides flexible student housing for those attending the colleges surrounding the dock - these residents will need the retail and entertainment that the market can provide.

04 - Transport

Transport Hub

This will be the main gateway into the dock area from the river and the city beyond. As such visitors can use the local fast ferry service from here to get to the market.

Veni-Vidi

This floating hotel's residents will be able to dock next to the market, whilst the hotel pods will also provide transport for non-hotel quests from the market around the site.

Islands

These floating units will be able to deploy and transport visitors around the site - providing an additional way of going to and from the market.

Interactions: Market - Buildings

(RDM Campus) Innovation Dock

One of the former manufacturing facilities of the shipyard, this large internal space now offers flexible facilities for companies to start-up or expand their product development and manufacture. It is situated alongside the dock and is able to offer working spaces of various areas that are supplied with services (power, water, etc) and that have access to the existing overhead lifting cranes.

This facility would be an ideal operational base for the project, enabling both initial component manufacture and assembly, as well as ongoing maintenance and logistics – for example servicing and repair of the floating market modules.

Housing Zone 1

This proposed housing area will be situated on derelict land behind the RDM Innovation Dock. As such future residents from here will pass through the market on a daily basis, making this a key source of revenue for the stall holders.

Interactions: Market - Objects

Dock Quay

The existing dock quay at RDM running along the market site will be reworked and transformed with human-scale green space and pathways to compliment the market promenades.

Dock Cranes

Currently disused and a local landmark, it is proposed that 1 of the 3 cranes is moved to sit next to a new access dock constructed as part of the market. The crane can then be brought back into use to facilitate construction and servicing of the market stalls at the neighbouring Innovation Dock.

Dock Perimeter Road

Beyond the quay is a perimeter access road around the RDM dock - this is key for service access to the market, though it is intended that public vehicles will be restricted from the road to allow the dockside to become a pedestrian space.

Dock Services

Gas, electric, water and sewerage services are all required at the market and will need to be routed from existing locations around the dock perimeter.
