VARIATIONS. Style as a definition of performance
Variations has the ambition of staying open around the clock, its main goal is to the ensure behavioural performance, adaptiveness and interaction with its users.
Fish are an expression of excellent performance through integration flexibility and ability to adapt. They are almost one with their environment.
Seeing fish as a styling evolution has performnace implications. The project is coneived as a variation of rib elements. This system can be fesable only by allowing a degree of deformation and mobement in the fiberglass structural elements. The elasticity of this structure is ensured by points of mobility built into the structure. The obvious places for these points are the Dorsal and Pelvic connections of the main tense cable (preventing the rib from flattening) with the fiberglass structure. Incorporating a spring element into the detail of these joints accounts for implicit deformations necessary for keeping the assemblage structure-skin together.
Consequently, interior elements and partitions, which seemingly connected to the structure, are just floating in the interior space (elements: interior fold which supports the upper floor, stairs) or loosely attached to the ribs by means of flexible joints(elements: tensile ETFE foils).
Variations is a hybrid architectural species.
Variations' implementation plan
Variations should be seen as a project that adds value to an existing array of RE-RDM activities. Consequently it should be built once Lusthof and Babel Tower have assumed their final positions. Construction will simultaneously begin on The Digital Gardener and Variations so as to precisely position the joint connection.
Variations has become an essential part of the dock binding projects which otherwise would have no connection to eachother.The water-project is an entity adding value to the developpement working as an attractor for the whole area. Emergence of a project such as Variations must be seen as sign that a specific community is quite well estabished and successfull.
In therms of feasibility Variations will be a profit oriented private investment. Considering the inovation character of the RDM the project would be an ideal testing ground for inovation and technological integration. Entrance to the baths/club will be based on a fee calculated according to the business plan of the developper.
The developper is free to use the space for promoting water related technologies and experiments. The developper must respect the original dual personality concept essential for Variations.
Any cultural or entertainment activities weather private or public are possible in Variations'space.
There should be no limit to the variety of the activities the space can/could be fitted to handle.
VARIATIONS. Activities as a measure of performance
VARIATIONS collects energy, water, information and people from the new RE-RDM environment. The Public Baths can be a powerful attractor in the area and in the city. Collaboration with: Babel Tower and Lusthof will provide users of the baths with access to a wide range of cultural facilities(Temple and Night Life Hub).
The Digital Gardener provides necessary drinking and bathing water; Transport Hub will ensure a fast and reliable connection from and to the city. Possible connections may be established with Islands, Veni-Vidi and Reizende Drijvende Markt adding relevance to the main connections.
