The park is an important aspect of the island, because it will enrich the everyday experience of the citizens in the nearby village. These people go for a walk or take out their dogs in the neighbourhood. The park will be a good way to draw the citizens more to the RDM area. At the same time they will be informed about the latest news or upcoming events in the RDM area by the projects on the island. By being up to date with what is going on the RDM area, the citizens will slowly start to feel the bond getting stronger with their village and the RDM again.

The park is also the very first view on arrival. This is a good chance to set the tone about the RDM area, giving the people a feeling of entering a continuous landscape that covers the whole RDM area. Ofcourse this feeling of continuous landscape is a result of the masterplan for the whole area (see Shared Masterplan-Landscape).

Another quality of the park is the activities that can take place on the landscape. As mentioned earlier, these activities will mostly be provided by Welcome to the Cave, such as a diving tower, public spaces and other platforms (for more information about these units go to [[project16:frontpage|Welcome to the Cave]]).

 +
The cave is one of the most important aspects of this project. It provides ''activities'', it is the ''structure'' that carries all the weight of the projects above and in some cases it has ''interactive'' parts with the projects above.

 +
The activities that are planned for this space are open for everybody. From young and old, student or tourist, everyone has access to it and everyone can find a place to enjoy themselves.
 +
Also, a big advantage of the cave is that it is protected from weather conditions because of the roof on top of it. This makes the cave and all its functions an ideal place to go to regardless of any weather condition.

On -4 level, which is on water level, there will be a ''skate & cycling track'' and a ''water park''.
+
The cave consists of three parts:
The cycling track will generate energy while moving.
+
The water park will be formed by the surrounding water, which will be filtered first. The idea of seeing the filtration and having fun at the same time really sums up the approach of the concept of our island; "Learn and Play".
+

On top level, which is on pier level and higher, there will be a ''park'' (green landscape) and a ''playground'' (which is workshop related).
+
[[File:Project 18 Cave square view.jpg|400px]]
The park will be first thing the visitors see as soon as they get off the Transport Hub, giving the visitors a good welcoming and lifeful impression.
+
The playground will have activities and which will be related to the project The Cave. Together we will create a space where people can put their information into practise, have fun and generate energy at the same time.

'''What has this design to offer?'''
+
Swimming pool is an important part of the cave. This part is inspired by the location of the project, which is on water. The pool is designed to have a stronger connection with the water. It is also a part that makes interactivity possible. The diving tower of the project the Cave and this pool is a good example of it.

This design has a couple of things to offer:
+
An advantage of having a roofed outdoor pool is that it can always be used. Especially when the pool can be transformed into an ice rink. In this case, during the summer it is a swimming pool and in the winter an ice rink.

1. '''Solidarity.''' Connecting several projects with each other. While connecting it also organizes the island, giving the island a structure. Making visible the diversity in routes, for example route for walking, bicycle, park etc.

2. '''Landscape.''' The existing RDM area has no green landscape. This project offers a new, refreshing approach to this area. It adds some life and colour to the site while also harvesting energy.
+

3. '''Energy.''' The landscape will support the idea of "Learn and Play". In this context, there are sustainable systems applied on the landscape. This makes this project the practising / experimenting aspect of the "Learn and Play" concept.

The desired effect of this project is to bring the connection back between the RDM and the village. At the interaction page it is explained that there is no visible connection anymore between the two areas. In order to achieve this connection, the design must have something to offer that will be interesting for both areas. That something shouldn't be a new function to draw people, but it should be something that will stimulate the habits of the citizens and the students.

For the citizens this will be a park. Most of the complaints about the unvisible connection comes from the old citizens. These people go for a walk or take out their dogs in the neighbourhood. The mini park will be a good way to enrich the every day experience of their walks. At the same time they will be informed about the latest news or upcoming events in the RDM area.

As for the students, the design will contain different sport facilities, which will be at some spots on the island a cooperation with the other members of "Learn and Play". The students don't have anything to do while they wait for the fast ferry. Sometimes it takes up to 30 minutes for the next ferry to arrive. During that time the students can kill some time in the gaming hall and play games ('''AND GENERATE ENERGY WHILE HAVING FUN'''), instead of waiting in the campus where they already had hours of classes. The gaming hall will also attract younger citizens to RDM.

Overview island

This project has two levels; a. Park (+4 meter) and b. Cave (+1 meter). Each level has its own character, providing different facilities and unique experiences.

A. Park

This level is a green landscape with walking paths connecting each project with the landscape. While going for a walk or when using the island to go from point A to B, people pass different projects such as EZ RDM, Welcome to the Cave, Open House and Connecting Dots, developing their knowledge about sustainability provided by these projects.

The green, open spaces on this level are mostly filled by several units provided by the project Welcome to the Cave. The units of that project together with the landscape that this project offers, form an interactive area. This combination adds the colour and the life needed to transform the industrial look of the RDM area into a more natural look.

B. Cave

This level is mostly based on activities and spaces where people can get together. It provides a skate park, a "cave square" and a swimming pool, which can also be used as an ice rink in the winter.

A. Park

Overview of the park

Project 18 Vogelvlucht park.jpg

As mentioned earlier, these activities will mostly be provided by Welcome to the Cave, such as a diving tower, public spaces and other platforms (for more information about these units go to Welcome to the Cave).

...into an "architectural" cave

The cave is one of the most important aspects of this project. It provides activities, it is the structure that carries all the weight of the projects above and in some cases it has interactive parts with the projects above.

The activities that are planned for this space are open for everybody. From young and old, student or tourist, everyone has access to it and everyone can find a place to enjoy themselves. Also, a big advantage of the cave is that it is protected from weather conditions because of the roof on top of it. This makes the cave and all its functions an ideal place to go to regardless of any weather condition.

The cave consists of three parts:

This area of the cave is especially appealing to the younger generation. The students in the housing project of Open House are a good example of the target group for the skate park.

2. Cave square

This part of the cave is a small square where people can come together to sit, to talk and to do some activities such as playing football. Other activities become also possible because of the empty space in the middle of the square, stimulating the fantasy of the users to do any activities they want, for example making music and dance.

3. Swimming pool

Swimming pool is an important part of the cave. This part is inspired by the location of the project, which is on water. The pool is designed to have a stronger connection with the water. It is also a part that makes interactivity possible. The diving tower of the project the Cave and this pool is a good example of it.

An advantage of having a roofed outdoor pool is that it can always be used. Especially when the pool can be transformed into an ice rink. In this case, during the summer it is a swimming pool and in the winter an ice rink.

There are a few ways to transform the pool into an ice rink. There is also a link of a possible way to do it under the Reference.
