Major connections
Reizende Drijvende Markt
De Geleerde Netwerk has a physical connection to Reizende Drijvende Markt. Students, locals and tourists alike can make the transition from the exhibition space and bar setting, onto the main promenade of the market. An afternoon can be spent between the two projects, purchasing goods from the market and relaxing in the urban green zone and exhibition space of De Geleerde Netwerk. De Geleerde Netwerk's curved lines morph into the Markt's more geometric design. Together, at the point of connection, the projects have altered the existing site to encourage pedestrian traffic toward both projects. This blurs the line between public and private space (dock and new developments). As a result, the project(s) will now be seen as more of an extension of the existing dock. The connection now reflects both projects and creates a seamless transition between the two.
The Knowledge Centre
De Geleerde Netwerk is also physically connected to The Knowledge Centre. De Geleerde Netwerk offers the residents of The Knowledge Centre outdoor space to contemplate and relax after the days' learning. It also provides a library and meeting room for the inhabitants. Terraced timber decking curves around to offer two pathways for The Knowledge Centre residents; one toward the centre of the project and one toward the exhibition and bar.
Rejuvenative Sandwich
De Geleerde Netwerk connects to the Rejuvenative Sandwich via the RDM dock to provide a continuous landscape. Connecting walkways through Vfood Restaurant enables locals, tourists and students to enjoy walking, un-interrupted through the whole south-west corner of the RDM development.
Dock
De Geleerde Netwerk has manipulated the shape of the existing RDM dock. The new freeform shapes are designed to encourage pedestrians onto the development. De Geleerde Netwerk becomes integrated into the site. Old and new become one.
Initial investigation of connections
One of the main objectives of De Geleerde Netwerk is to encourage visitors to read and learn about design and fabrication and appreciate the work being created at the adjacent RDM campus. In order to do so, people must be encouraged to spend time in the development. De Geleerde Netwerk has designed 5 different centres which interact with each other through a terraced landscape that meanders around the pavilions. The landscape offers a much needed urban green zone for residents, students and locals. Many spaces have been created throughout the outdoor landscape for private and public interactions. Small public squares and relaxation zones enable a range of activities (ie. reading, eating, meeting, sports). All of these outdoor areas work to link the activity centres and encourage people to spend time in De Geleerde Netwerk.
