Interactions

Connections with Reizende Drijvende Markt have been refined. De Geleerde Netwerk's curved lines morph into the Markt's more geometric design. Together, at the point of connection, the projects have altered the existing site to encourage pedestrian traffic toward both projects. This blurs the lines between public and private space (dock and new developments). As a result the project(s) will now be seen as more of an extension of the existing dock. The connection now reflects both projects and creates a seamless transition between the two.

The new connection to The Knowledge Centre is still developing as the projects' footprints change. However, the connection point to The Knowledge Centre creates a public space at the entrance to TKC as well as water bay. This bay can potentially be used for water transport and to encourage wildlife and water interaction like the other vegetation islands evident in Het Geleerde Network's scheme.

This image shows the connecting points to the dock, to the Markt, and to The Knowledge Centre, the areas in dark pink reflect the public transition spaces / squares for people to congregate and the light pink highlight shows the smoot transitions creted between project boundaires.

The following image shows water spaces left open by Het Geleerde Netwerk. The spaces allow floating vegetation islands to develop to encourage interaction with the water / site and also with wildlife. The site will need to be altered as it has been for the connection with The Markt to keep the curved lines fluid throughout the development. This issue is highlighted below in white.

The image below shows how Het Geleerde Network has created water transport bays by connecting to The Knowledge Centre. These bays provide an opportunity for Islands to transport people and dock in. These areas of open water create a peaceful, protected patch of water in the otherwise busy development.

We are no longer going to connect with Veni-Vidi hotel as The Knowledge Centre has moved locations to become De Geleerde Netwerk's neighbour. The Knowledge Centre needs access to De Geleerde Netwerk's library and reading room. The arm that previously connected to Veni-Vidi will now connect to a public square at the entrance to The Knowledge centre. The Markt will eventually connect to this same square. It will provide a meeting point for people and activate The Knowledge Centre's entrance. The circular void that this connection will create will tie into De Geleerde Netwerk's concept and create's opportunities for future development of additional floating vegetation islands.

1.Connection with Vincent. He is a staff member of RDM. He stated that RDM is not like a traditional campus; there are no student facilities where the students can relax and spend time with their peers outside of university hours.

2.Connection with the students of RDM, including Mike. Students are the main users of this area. They come to school here 5 days a week, where they study until 5pm each day. The school provides lunch - so the students don't need to leave campus. The students leave campus at 5pm and don't hang around the dock as there is nothing to do. There is opportunity to provide spaces for the students.

3.Connection with Dokkaffee. This is the only place in the RDM campus vicinity where you can have a break, sit and drink a coffee. At the same time it's one of two places in the neighbourhood where you can have a lunch. However the Dokkaffee is overpriced and as a result, it is not frequented by students. The students prefer to eat they food outdoor, with no protection from the elements. There is an opportunity here to develop a place where the students feel comfortable to sit and relax during their lunch hours.

4.Connection with students' handmade projects,There is no existing place for students to exhibit their handmade works. As a result there is a collection of student work outside. Because of bad weather, their projects decay over time. There is an opportunity to design an exhibition space dedicated to students works with appropriate protection from the elements.

5.Connection with RDM Campus. This building is the most important point of this area. This building provides the most human interaction on site. De Geleerde Netwerk should connect with this building as the students in this building have no space to hold informal meetings, party or relax.

6.Connection with the abandoned foundations of dock. The foundations of abandoned dock are made from concrete and iron. Because of their strength ,they can be used as inspiration for the foundation of De Geleerde Netwerk projects.
