Illusofism

author(s):Nina Verkerk

Summary

The concept of the design is based on a magic trick with an orange from the 19th century. The orange is cut in two, but is connected with some loops made of the peel of the orange. It is possible to see the orange as almost a perfect sphere. But when you pull the parts apart, you get a very special pattern.

The shape must be symmetrical, recognizable as a perfect form, and must open itself when it is needed. For the design a half regular polyhedron (a rhombicuboctahedron in its reduced form) is chosen. This form can open itself in all directions because it is possible to grow and reduce. Very important is that the sphere must be connected with itself all the time. The connections must be striking.

The essence of the design can be summarized into a few words: Flexibility, transformation and floating. The design will be flexible by transforming itself. When more space is needed, it is possible to increase the space in all directions. The starting point for now is a half regular polyhedron: built with only triangles and squares. For the design is floating and water is the only thing what gives pressure, it is easy for the design to increase itself in all directions.
