Clean water floats, stretched between piers

It is intended that the project becomes a medium in which local and foreign actors can engage one another through sports and leisure activities connected to the feature element of the site: water. Activities like swimming, bathing, skating will play an important role in a new community which will form around RDM. The projects we connect to have an opinion on what this community should become and how it can impact the area and Rotterdam.

Looking at variations on site meant analyzing the qualities of items relevant to the project. By items the team means people, objects, buildings and projects. Analyzing positions within a relevant class of objects, the piers, provided the reason to intuitively migrate from the designated position, towards the centre of the dock. According to the new situation(new neighbors, new intentions, informed tags) it was possible to geometrically define improved connections. An area of movement, stretching from east to west was next determined. This involved fixed parameters (piers-adaptable connections to land) and dynamic unpredictable parameters (neighboring projects, people and other entities). All these positions, translated into geometry, describe an area where the project tag can comfortably move(this can change if input parameters are altered).

For now, the chosen location of VARIATIONS is the geometrical center of this area. Variations is, for now, linked to the following entities:

People: architecture and urban planning professors visiting RDM.[[1]]

The interview is relevant to our project as it raisis practical questions as accessibility and potential for local and municipal development, but also touches isuues as: the design exercise in itself - site may be interesting for some approaches but totally uninteresting for others; to build or not to build (what is really important for the site and why)Even if the interview does not answer all the questions, it still made us think...

users&users: swarm(flock)member-royal swan:

the idea behind the tagging and analisys process was finding aspects of variation on site. The swan is a succesful actor on the RDM landscape.

Objects: pontoon(s)[[2]] This pontoon is an important connecting element between the dock and the visiting ships, creating an adaptable moving link among the two.

traffic mirror[[3]] The traffic mirror faces the land,it stands exactly at the corner of the site, changing perceptions_variations. For VARIATIONS, the mirror is an expression of changing attitudes towards the dock(from land)and vice versa.
