Students and starters are the main clients of OpenHouse. The main interaction in this project is between the users and the cushion-structure. When movement is being measured, local inflated cushions will deflate to create space. Hereby spaces will be created by the unique needs of future residents. They can share, open, and close their space whenever they want. Rather than paying per month, the residents pay per second and their preferable conditions. In this way the tenants' will become more aware about the amount of energy space they use & reserve, which could aid a more sustainable way of living.

Main Elements of Interaction

OH Interactions.jpg OpenHouse - Re-RDM

Because of all the different activities which could take place in the ReRDM dock, it could be the main cultural attraction park outside the dense centre of Rotterdam. However, to give a sense of ownership, have eyes on the street and bring livelyness to the new area, students should be housed here. Where other types of people might find it risky, the students are willing to try the RDM out. The population of students could then be seen as possible incubator group of the reRDM dock.

OpenHouse - projects

Within the RDM-dock, OpenHouse is situated in the Learn&Play area. In this particular environment, students, tourists, businessmen and other come together to learn and play about sustainability. This conceptual idea will be materialized into a central workshop-square where courses can be done, installations can be exposed and the people can meet. Where The Wave Phenomena and Ez RDM will focus on the information exploitation, the Continuality project will provide a set of different public typologies such as a park, a route and the workshop square. Because the project is placed on top of the Continuality project, the entrees and wet cells of the houses are embedded into the structural logic of Continuality. Hence, the Cave provides the OpenHouse with practical space for their laundry, bike-storage and a workshop-room. Hereby, the workshopsquare becomes an important infrastructural node for the students, which will aid the blending of people in the learn and play environment.

OpenHouse - existing buildings

RDM-campus has a lot of potential tenants for OpenHouse. The growing amount of students that the campus has can be housed in the area. Because student-campus is tucked in between both the dock as the existing buildings, it also forms a lively connection between the old and the new.

OpenHouse - persons

Students are the main clients of OpenHouse. The main interaction in this project is between the users and the moving structure. When movement is being measured, local elements will move from each other. Those moved elements create spaces which are unique in size form and movement. The future residents can share, open, and close their space whenever they want. Rather than paying per month, the residents pay per second and their preferable conditions. In this way the tenants' will become more aware about the amount of energy space they use & reserve, which could aid a more sustainable way of living.

Main Guidelines Physical Interaction

OH scenarios.gif Ability to share spaces

Students have to be able to share spaces. This will be mainly focused on the spaces where students relax, study, eat, cook and sleep.

Ability to adjust floorplan

According to their own lifestyle, students will be able to adjust the spatial configuration of their units according to their unique needs. In order to stay realistic, hygiene activities will be excluded from this ambition. Thereby the location of for instance watersupply does not have to be changed.

Ability to enlarge spaces

This is practically a combination of the two needs above mentioned. When students (temporarily) need more space, their neighbors can adjust their floorplan and the space will reserved for the one who is in need for it.
