Expanded polystyrene (EPS) was chosen as the main material. Apart from having a very high strength to weight ratio and very stiff, EPS is 100% recyclable. An EPS grade of 250 was chosen, meaning that is has the compression strength of 250KPa = 250KN/msq. The characteristics of EPS together with the tension strength of steel creates an very structural composite material which doesn't need and form-work. The EPS also works as insulation for the soil and water not to freeze. | Expanded polystyrene (EPS) was chosen as the main material. The Structure will be fixed with submerged pile foundations, transferring the load to the riverbed. Cross-bracing will stabilize the structure against lateral water forces. The system allows vertical movement of the structure according to the tide water level. Hence keeping the building on the same level of floating neighboring projects.
