- A engineering staff lives in Rotterdam Central. He pointed out beside a lack of commercial and entertainment functions, transportation remains as a big problem. This implies the local needs and potentials for a transportation hub.
Transport-Project09
In a transport space, interactions frequently happen between different transportation. The following diagram tries to understand the feasible transport and transfer in the space.
1, land, water, sky
2, transport speed, size, amount, tide
3, public or private
4, dwell time
After that, a dig into the transport system has been carried out......
Present water public transport system
Present - Ferry ports:
A. Hook of Holland B. Rotterdam C. RDM D. Scheepvaart E. Veer Erasmusbrug F. Hotel New York G. Veer Stormpolder
Present-shipping lines:
International line A: Ferries from Hook of Holland to Harwich,UK, frequency: 1/day, time table: 2:30pm, passengers: 600
International line B: Ferries from Rotterdam to Hull,UK, frequency: 1/day, time table: 8:30pm, passengers: 500
- Inland line E-D-C: Ferries from Veer Erasmusbrug to Scheepvaart to RDM, departure at every :00 and :30, 7:00 to 10:00
Inland line E-G: Ferries from Veer Erasmusbrug to Veer Stormpolder to ......, departure at every :10 and :40, 7:10 to 10:10
Watertaxi 1: the Veerhaven and the Leuvehaven to Hotel New York, 7:00 to 0:00, 12 passengers, 60 km/h
Watertaxi 2: Maastaxi on 30 docks, 7:00 to 0:00, 12 passengers, 60 km/h
- This ferry access is the only regular shipping access on site at present. The whole line takes approximately 25min. The ferry has a maximum capacity of 150 passengers, and the number of passengers changes as the chart below. The average amount of passengers is 850/day on weekdays and 420/day on weekends.

New transport demands
New projects on RDM site generate new transport demands. The example data below came from several key projects with ability to attract considerable non-local passengers.
- Babel Tower [[2]]: 50 fixed residents, 200-1000 daily visitors;
Rejuvenative Sandwich [[3]]: 3000㎡,500 daily visitors;
NEW sPARKs [[4]]: 30 hotel rooms, 40 residents, 100 visitors;
lusthof [[5]]: 80 daily(night) visitors;
- Reizen Drijvende Markt [[6]]: 1000 daily visitors;
Variations [[7]]: 100-200 daily visitors;
DwellingGrower [[8]]: 40 fixed residents;
Water Morphs [[9]]: 100-200 daily visitors;
- Floating Theater [[10]]: 500-600 per show.
After all it is nearly impossible to predict the a precised number. But considering the needs of the projects with "*", especially the Theater, the transport amount within 30min would better exceed 600. That is, if 1 ferry carries 150 passengers, we 4 ferries in half an hour, at least in rush hours. And project like Lusthof attract special visitors at certain time. Let me see if I can get them some international tourists!

Project-object(s) Transitions
Connection to shipping line [11]
- As the Transportation Hub, this project should be connected directly and physically to the shipping line
Connection to the village Heijplaat [12]
- The Transportation Hub will assume the doorway of the village
water transport – land transport (of different speed)
