==The centre and the campus==
+
</div>
The centre is situated in a highly inspirational, cutting edge and innovative area (the future international cultural and sustainable-hub of the Hyperbody RDM Campus) supplying a wide range of activities. For instance, the guests can take part in the maintanance of the urban farms, can volunteer at and visit the museums and performance centres, can eat at one of the many restaurants and be amazed by the incredible cutting-edge architecture and sustainability. All these activities are part of the 30-day program offered by '''The Knowledge Centre'''.

==The 30-day program==
+
=Introducing the project=
The main part of the program consists of lectures and workshops. These are mainly offered at the centre itself, but can also be hosted in one of the other spaces available at the RDM Campus. The content of the lectures and workshops is according to a theme which changes every 30-day period. For instance, in march the theme will focus on music, in april on drama, in may on philosophy and in june on economics. Every 30-day period the goal is to attract a certain amount of professionals who can also contribute to the theme. They will supply a part of the lectures and workshops and will be offered compensation. Besides that top-professionals from the field of the theme will be attracted to share their knowledge and skills. Besides the main theme (major) there will be an amount of secondary themes (minors). These minors will stay the same every 30-day period and are partly based on RDM-specific themes.

==How to become a guest?==
+
This project is not necessarily about just a building. The building is just a tool for the project to be realized. This chapter covers first the proposed program and second the supporting ''inter''actions.
One option is to be an employee of a big succesfull company (like Google or some consultancy agency). Your boss can buy you a place in the centre. This will be very expensive and a main source of income for the centre. But then again, the company will benefit greatly from their returned reborn employees. A second option is to apply for a scholarship. Different scholarships will be available, for individuals (some costs will have to be covered by the guest) and students (a minimum of costs will have to be coveredb by the guest). A third option is to be invited by the centre itself. But therefore you will have to be either the president of the United States or named Rem Koolhaas.
+

==Future development==

If a consistent stream of intellectual and creative people will attend the centre there are extra possibilities in the future. By hosting sponsored themes (major or minors, nowadays referred to as business cases) or themes with a clear ''good'' societal impact extra funds can be raised or societal issues or developmental issues can be solved.

The ReRDM urban plan proposes a unique cultural hub for redevelopment of the area situated around the RDM docks. Some twenty-five unique close grouped projects, each on the cutting edge of construction methods, sustainability and culture. All these projects supply a wide range of activities. For instance, an innovative urban farm, different galleries exploring new spacious possibilities, libraries, floating markets and hotel rooms, multi-functional lecture halls, moving bridges, unique recreation areas like an underwater pool and a vertically stacked park, etc. All these projects have something in common: stimulating, motivating and educating visitors.

That is why this project proposes a new sort of commercial activity for this site. This project proposes the site as the Knowledge Campus (i.e. RDM Campus, on the website both names are used).

One can define two levels of interaction. In the first level the project is one of the many ingredients, a small piece in a large area. It is the way this small piece interacts with its neighbors and surroundings, nearby and far-away. The second level is zoomed in. It is about the way visitors interact with the project, the experience they have when visiting and using the project.

==Project based interactions==
+
Nowadays, privately and publically organized lectures of all sorts are getting more and more popular. Just think of the success of the Lowlands University initiative of Lowlands (the biggest Dutch music festival) or the DWDD University initiated by Matthijs van Nieuwkerk (most frequently watched dutch talkshow). Everybody wants to learn always. More educational books are read – in spare time – every day. People want to learn and develop themselves during their complete lives. The Knowledge Campus will be a university.
 +
In India, there are hotels which are not quite hotels. They are gatherings, they are movements. People stay there who think alike. Every year guests are staying there for some period of time. They pray together, they eat together, but most of all, they talk together. They discuss, they debate, they share, they think, they learn. Those places are called ashrams. Everybody knows that Steve Jobs went to an Indian ashram, just before his Apple success. Everybody knows that the Beatles spent months in an Indian ashram writing new music. This project is not about recreating an ashram, but it is about creating an environment similar to an ashram. A place where people not only stay, but where people stay together. Where people learn, not only through courses offered by the university, but also through sharing, talking and discussing with other guests. The Knowledge Campus will be a university hotel for educational holidays.

These interactions are based on how other projects can support The Knowledge Center and vice versa. For instance, by supplying volunteers or educational spaces. Because all the projects are under constant development this list of interactions is always outdated. For now, the list is classified by different actions.

As you can imagine, offering a program like this will not be cheap. That is why the Knowledge Campus focuses on three different target groups. The first group pays the regular tariff. Part of this group are retirees, employees whose employer would like to invest in her of his development and other reasonably wealthier people. Different programs of different tariffs are offered: in this way guests do not have to be extremely wealthy to attend. The second group is all about intellectual exchange: if you bring knowledge in, you will receive knowledge in return. Teachers, professors, volunteers and other people who are part of the curriculum, will also benefit from other courses offered by the Knowledge Campus. And, last but not least, the third group will consist of people who applied for scholarships. Most of them will be young people who logically do not have access to large sums of money.

==Site Analysis==
+
=So, what is the building about?=

This chapter covers everything from the historical analysis of the site to the developement of the project's activities and interactions.
+
As mentioned in the introduction, the building is a tool for the project to succeed. It is a representational place where all the available activities from around the campus come together. An interactive and confronting architectural structure which does not lay itself upon the visitor, but stimulates the development of his or her ideas about and to reflect upon themselves, society, philosophy, economics, politics and moral and value questions. The place will have characteristics of present day functions in common like: meditation centre, cathedral, monastery, university, social club, bar/restaurant, theatre, hotel, public park, library, museum, monument, fair, palace, etc. The people visiting the Knowledge Campus meet, stay, relax, talk, eat, discuss, think and sleep. The building is the home of the guests of the Knowledge Campus. It is the Knowledge Centre.
<!-- For now, this part is sufficient, but in the end this approach is too general. An approach more focused on my project, preferably only with images and diagrams is preferred. Focus on the site visit, the found interaction, analysis and found possibilities. -->
+
==History==
+
<!-- ADD SOURCE. -->
+
The RDM area (Rotterdam Droogdok Maatschappij or Rotterdam Dry-Dock Company) is one of the four large industrial port areas close to the centre of Rotterdam. The site was developped at the start of the 20th century. Two contrasting elements mark the site: the large industrial buildings and ship-warfs close to the canal and the small-scale, green and cosy village (Heijplaat) behind it. The village provided housing for the industry workers.

<!-- Add: aerial shot of the site and the two contrasting elements -->

The eighties mark a decline in activities in the Rotterdam port and finally result in bankruptcy of RDM. In the years following, other activities emerge in the abondened former RDM buildings. Among new industrial activities, some non-industrial activities discover the former dock area as an inspiring an interesting new accommodation.
+
[[file:13 steigenga 20121008 ACTIONy.jpg|850px]]

==Current Situation==

The area currently hosts a wide range of new activities developped since the bankruptcy of the RDM. Besides the above mentioned industrial activities like the transfer of goods between different means of transport, the area attempts to shift its focus from transport industry to other fields of industry and non-industry. Currently, the list of activities include:

==Future Plans==
+
The Knowledge Centre interacts with the other places around the Knowledge Campus (i.e. RDM Campus). These interactions can be divided in different sorts based on the functional relationship. Certain projects just offer a place to relax, others offer lecture halls, workshop areas and other education supportive spaces. Therefore the interactions are divided in the following groups: education, primary needs, transport and other activities (primarily leisure). Due to the project of the Knowledge Campus, almost every other project is interacted with. In the end, almost every projects can somehow attribute to multiple groups, only the main interaction is chosen for each.

As the construction of the second maasvlakte is looking to be finished quite soon, a majority of the transport activities of the port will move away from the ''Stadshavens'' of Rotterdam. A huge area will be available for redevelopment. The Rotterdam Port Authority, the owner of the area, together with the municipality, set up a plan. The four ports, the RDM area is one of them, will be redevelopped in order to meet housing demands, to create (start-up) innovative business opportunities and focus on sustainable energy and water management development. The RDM area is supposed to be developped as a high-end innovative technological business area in combination with leisure activities for people all around Rotterdam and area. Thus, a good public transport connection has a high priority. In order to reach these goals, five strategies have been created. RDM takes four of these strategies in account:

As stated above, the Knowledge Centre will answer to the need for a home of the monthly Knowledge Centre guests. This home provides space for a range of activities, regular home-related activities like sleeping, eating and relaxing, but also informal program-related activities like discussing, meeting and reflecting. The second part of these activities will be stimulated through the architectural design. The places for sleeping, eating and relaxing should be placed in a way that stimulates interaction while shifting from one to the other. The rooms should be placed like a village design, thus stimulating casual and coincidental meetings and providing public spaces of various sizes to have informal discussions and meetings.

[edit] Introducing the project

This project is not necessarily about just a building. The building is just a tool for the project to be realized. This chapter covers first the proposed program and second the supporting interactions.

[edit] The Knowledge Campus

[edit] Developments in society

Nowadays, privately and publically organized lectures of all sorts are getting more and more popular. Just think of the success of the Lowlands University initiative of Lowlands (the biggest Dutch music festival) or the DWDD University initiated by Matthijs van Nieuwkerk (most frequently watched dutch talkshow). Everybody wants to learn always. More educational books are read – in spare time – every day. People want to learn and develop themselves during their complete lives. The Knowledge Campus will be a university. In India, there are hotels which are not quite hotels. They are gatherings, they are movements. People stay there who think alike. The Knowledge Campus will be a university hotel for educational holidays.

[edit] How does it work?

The Knowledge Campus is an open university at the RDM Campus. Guests are offered to stay at the campus for a period ranging from a couple days up to a month. During these days the guests are able to attend lectures, workshops, classes, etc. These activities are organized spread over the campus. [edit] Future development

If a consistent stream of intellectual and creative people will attend the centre there are extra possibilities in the future. By hosting sponsored themes (referred to as business cases) or themes with a clear good societal impact extra funds could be raised.

[edit] So, what is the building about?

As mentioned in the introduction, the building is a tool for the project to succeed. It is a representational place where all the available activities from around the campus come together. The building is the home of the guests of the Knowledge Campus. It is the Knowledge Centre.
