ECONOMICAL INTERACTIONS

16 20121008 CrowdFunding.jpg

The project is economically feasible through a combination of crowd and public funding.

The basic economical strategy is to sell each wooden block of the Cave to the public. By buying one or several blocks you become a backer of the project and help realize the public space. In return you get to decide the motive of your own block/blocks, which will be milled on the surface of the wood. It can be anything from the picture of your newborn baby, your crew’s tag or your company’s logotype. These customized blocks together create the major part of the buildings façade.

This strategy not only helps gather money for the project but more importantly includes the public in the building in a very physical way giving them extra motivation to visit the Cave.

A similar strategy has been adapted to realize the project I MAKE ROTTERDAM , a bridge which is currently gathering backers to help realize the project.

PHYSICAL INTERACTIONS

• 200 m2 of the public space is provided for the housing project Open House making sure that the students and new-starters living in Open House have a place to meet with each other but also with other actors of the RDM area.

• The CAVE provides 150 m2 of workshop space for The Knowledge Center's 30-day program.

• The building has a direct connection with the existing pier and shares its rough and industrial materiality on the outside.

ENVIRONMENTAL INTERACTIONS

•The project addresses the issue of providing energy through two different types of interactions.

Firstly the building is a part of smart energy grid aiming at creating an energy system of diversified micro energy generators, which is less dependent on the centrally produced power. The CAVE contributes to the grid by utilizing Piezo Electric Generators (more information on the Energy Page) at the entrance areas where the most flow of people regularly pass.

Secondly the CAVE exchanges energy within its own different functions as well as with its neighbouring project Open House to balance the heat and cool need of the activities. For instance the workshop area’s need for cooling is balance by exchanging heat with the Open House residential building which is mainly in need of heating.

• The RDM-dock is at the moment home to wild life such as sea birds and marine species whose in habitat will largely be affected by the development of the area. The HYDRO^3- building will provide new habitat for theses species.

SOCIAL INTERACTIONS

• HYDRO^3 interacts with RDM Campus’s students and staff by providing them public Space as well as by being a modern power plant showcasing and communicating how energy is harvested and stored to its visitors.

HYDRO^3 → RDM Campus [Building]

• HYDRO^3 can be seen as an extension of the Centrum for Sustainable living. The building showcases ideas and solutions exhibited by the Center not least applying the Cradle-to-Cradle principal ( for more information watch Waste = Equals Food and read Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things) in its design and operation.
