Amsterdam

The most famous red-light district in the world is probably de Wallen in Amsterdam, this district has risen up in the centre of Amsterdam around the oude kerk. The prostitutes have gradually distributed themselves by their own "specialties" and gender. According to experts its succes is largely due to the fact that the prostitution is interspersed with other small businesses, most of which are focused on the pleasure industries (drugs, alcohol, sex).

The atmosphere in the area is caused by the narrow streets and the red lights (hence the name red light district). This sets a mood unlike anywhere else in the city, purposely tailored for the local sex-industry.

Utrecht

Utrecht has two red light districts, most notable of these is het Zandpad. This red light district is set-up according to different principles than red light districts which traditionally grew inside city limits. Placed on houseboats along a straight stretch of canal het Zandpad is a complete functional expression of the prostitution business, because of this the location is very stark and uninviting, especially for the women working there.
